History of Calgary

You may think that learning about the history of Calgary is somewhat trivial to your goal to find a job in the said city. However, having a general view of its past can indeed give you an advantage in your objective as you will find out the industries that are most prevalent in Calgary by knowing its history. Hence, here is a brief summary of the significant past events in Calgary.

The history of Calgary can be traced back approximately 11,000 years ago when it was an area inhabited by the Blackfoot people. Centuries after, Europeans began to settle in its regions. Within the 1870's, a considerably large number of people from Europe had settled in the area, and it became more urban and it was soon turned into a major station of the North West Mounted Police. Calgary became a major center for agriculture and commerce in 1883 when a railway station was built in it. In 1894, Calgary was deemed as the first city in what used to be considered as the Northwest Territories.

In the 1900's, oil was discovered in Alberta. Eventually, a vast industry for it was established in 1947 when huge oil reserves were found in the province. The city of Calgary quickly turned into an oil industry hub, thus making its economy grow and flourish. Between 1970 and late 1980, the population of Calgary increased drastically. Furthermore, many of the tall buildings were built in the city during these years. Today, although the oil industry still plays a key role in the economy of Calgary, other fields have started to thrive including those of tourism, transportation, and light manufacturing.
